Sports DIGEST : CS Northridge Gets Real Test--UCLA--in Men’s Volleyball

The Cal State Northridge men’s volleyball team will open its California Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. season against UCLA tonight at Pauley Pavilion.

UCLA, led by sophomore All-American Asbjorn Volstad, has won four straight NCAA championships and 11 of 15 since the NCAA began sponsoring volleyball championships in 1970.

The Bruins lost five starters through graduation from last year’s 38-0 team, but among their newcomers is freshman Jeff Campbell, who was an all-City performer in basketball and volleyball last year at Chatsworth High.

CSUN Women Third in Gymnastics

The Cal State Northridge women’s gymnastics team finished with 169.15 points, its top score of the season Saturday, but placed third in a triangular meet with UC Berkeley and Washington State.

Janine Elliot, a sophomore All-American, was the top performer with a fifth in the all-around and a second in the bars.

Cal won the meet with 175.35 points, while Washington State scored 173.10.

The CSUN gymnasts are 3-3 this season. On Friday, CSUN collected 166.6 points while placing second in a triangular meet with San Jose State and Sonoma State. San Jose State won the meet with 168.95 points.

Stacey Baker was second in the all-around Friday with 34.35 points, while Janine Elliot won the vault and the floor exercise. Baker won the uneven parallel bars.

On Saturday, they will participate in a triangular meet with UC Santa Barbara and UC Davis.

Municipal Basketball League

Several openings remain for C and D division teams in the municipal sports adult basketball leagues.

Teams are still needed for a Tuesday night league at Monroe High in Sepulveda, a Wednesday night league at Branford Recreation Center in Arleta, a Thursday night league at Kennedy High in Granada Hills and a Sunday morning league at Branford.

The C division is for ex-junior college and high school players, while the D division is comprised of recreation-caliber players.

Swimming in Simi

The Simi Valley Swim Team will hold tryouts Feb. 4-8 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Rancho Simi pool, located on Royal Avenue at Erringer Road. The team is open to all area residents aged 5 to 18.

Northridge Little League Tryouts

The Northridge American Little League will hold tryouts and late registration Feb. 2-3 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Little League complex on Devonshire Street between Wilbur Avenue and Reseda Boulevard.

Boys and girls aged 5 1/2 to 15 will play in divisions ranging from T-ball to senior baseball. Players will be placed on teams after tryouts. There are limited openings in the 14- to 15-year-old and the 8- to 12-year-old divisions.
