El Modena High School quarterback Brett Johnson, who led the Vanguards to two consecutive Southern Conference football titles, has made a verbal commitment to Arizona State and will sign a national letter of intent with the Sun Devils on Feb. 13.

Johnson, a 6-foot 1-inch, 180-pounder, completed 136 of 230 pass attempts for 2,037 yards and 18 touchdowns in his senior season and also played free safety. He visited Nebraska and Fresno State but chose the Sun Devils because they showed the greatest interest in his ability as a quarterback.

Johnson said the sudden decision by Sun Devil Coach Darryl Rodgers to join the Detroit Lions of the NFL didn’t affect his decision adding, “With a new coach, I’ll get just as good a chance of starting as anyone else.”
