College of the Canyons broke open a close game against host L.A. Valley College with a 50-point second half to record its first Mountain Valley Conference win against five losses.

Bernadette Engels, a 5-9 forward, scored 28 points for Canyons, while teammate Tina Journay, a forward, had 20 points and 15 rebounds. Center Julie Fauria added 14 points.

“We went to a full-court press after halftime, and forced a lot of turnovers,” Canyons Coach Frank Wright said.

Guard Sonja Mason scored 18 points, mostly from outside, for L.A. Valley. She made eight of 15 field goal attempts.

L.A. Valley fell to 3-3 in conference.
