PREP BASKETBALL : Girls Roundup : Uecke Leads El Toro to 67-42 Win Over Mission Viejo

Jennifer Uecke scored 21 points and grabbed 13 rebounds Thursday night to lead the El Toro High School girls basketball team to a 67-42 upset victory over Mission Viejo in a South Coast League game played in the Chargers’ gym.

Vicki Mallett added 20 points and 8 assists to help El Toro (15-5) earn a share of first place with the Diablos. Both teams are 9-1.

In other South Coast League action:

Capistrano Valley 36, Laguna Hills 24--Caylin Combs scored 11 points and Heather Schoeny added 11 more to help the Cougars defeat the Hawks at Capistrano Valley.

Dana Hills 57, San Clemente 35--Laura Dowdy (18 points), Roberta Forster (14) and Sheila McCrea (12) led the Dolphins (5-6, 5-12). San Clemente is 0-9 in league.

In Angelus League action:

Mater Dei 79, St. Joseph 56--Mary Gainey scored 27 points to lead the first-place Monarchs (8-0, 21-3) to the win over the Jesters at Lakewood.

In Century League action:

Foothill 73, El Modena 29--Jennifer Osur scored 28 points and Stacey Barnes added 13 for the host Knights (12-0, 21-3). Theresa Brown had 18 for El Modena (5-7, 7-11).

Canyon 38, Santa Ana Valley 30--Angie Nelsen had 16 points and 11 rebounds to pace the host Comanches (7-5, 12-8). Cathy Smith led the Falcons (5-7 in league) with 13 points.

In Empire League action:

El Dorado 65, Pacifica 36--Junior forward Jill Matyuch scored a career-high 33 points to help the Hawks beat the Mariners at El Dorado. Cathy Newvine added 12 points for El Dorado (8-4, 11-8).

Loara 52, Cypress 24--Center Shana Beer had a game-high 20 points to lead the Saxons (10-2, 19-5) at Loara. Colleen Kelly had 16 for Cypress (2-10, 3-16).

Esperanza 63, Kennedy 40--Sharon Warmus scored 17 points for the host Aztecs, who improved their league record to 12-0 (18-4 overall). Ursula Lovely led Kennedy (8-4) with 11 points.

Los Alamitos 37, Katella 35--Kelli Moore’s two free throws with three seconds left gave the Griffins the win. Mary Reis had 16 points for Los Alamitos (5-7, 6-12). Katella’s Sandra Johnson had 12 points.

In Garden Grove League action:

Bolsa Grande 40, Santiago 24--The Matadors (6-2, 12-8) were led by senior guard Lori Weir’s 14 points in the game at Bolsa Grande. Kathryn Mate-Mate had nine points for Santiago.

La Quinta 55, Garden Grove 49--Melissa Fejdasz scored 20 points to lead the host Aztecs (8-0, 19-4). Karen Caries had 17 points for Garden Grove.

In Orange League League action:

Brea-Olinda 78, Savanna 28--Guards Jodi Kleber and Carrie Egan scored 25 and 16 points respectively to lead the Wildcats (8-0, 23-0). Teisha Clark had eight points for the Rebels (2-6 in league).

Valencia 59, Magnolia 56 (OT)--The Sentinels’ Michelle Carter made a five-foot jump shot with three seconds left to send the game into overtime. Stacey Blank’s three-point play in overtime gave the Tigers the lead for good. Steffi Strauss had 16 points for Valencia (6-2, 10-9). Carter had 33 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Sentinels (2-6, 7-12).

In Sunset League action:

Ocean View 58, Marina 37--Trina Vlachos led all scorers with 17 points for the visiting Seahawks (7-1, 17-5). The Vikings (2-6, 9-13) were led by Heather Kirkup’s 13 points.

Edison 53, Huntington Beach 46--The Chargers were led by Denise Ogburn and Kristen Wilson, who scored 15 points apiece. Yvonne Holaday had 11 points for the Oilers (2-6, 9-12).

Fountain Valley 67, Westminster 53--Jackie Cook scored 17 points to lead the Barons to the win over the Lions at Fountain Valley. The Barons (7-1 in league, 16-6 overall) remain in a first-place tie with Ocean View.
