Girls Roundup : Mater Dei Routs St. Paul to Clinch 3rd Consecutive Angelus League Championship

Mater Dei High School clinched its third consecutive Angelus League girls basketball championship under Coach Carolyn Campbell with a 63-39 victory Tuesday over St. Paul at Santa Fe Springs.

The Monarchs blew the game wide open in the second quarter when they outscored the Swordsmen, 22-8. Mary Gainey, who had 8 points in that quarter, finished with 18 points to lead Mater Dei. Her backcourt partner, Noelle Manfre, added 11 points and 7 steals.

Mater Dei’s league record is 9-0 with one game to go. St. Paul dropped to 7-2.

Though her team won by a large margin, Campbell said she did not take anything for granted before the game.

“We’ve built up quite a little rivalry with St. Paul,” Campbell said. “It’s sort of like Mater Dei and Servite with the boys. Anything can happen.”

St. Paul’s Monica Tourville led all scorers with 21 points. Gerri Gainey had eight rebounds for Mater Dei.

In Century League action:

Foothill 77, Santa Ana Valley 30--Foothill (13-0) was impressive from the start, creating nine first-quarter turnovers. The Knights led, 41-9, at halftime. Foothill’s Jennifer Osur led all scorers with 22 points.

In Empire League action:

Esperanza 47, Loara 37--Esperanza clinched the Empire League championship with the victory. The Saxons double- and triple-teamed Esperanza center Jennifer Lapaglia and limited her to seven points. But the Aztecs (13-0) took advantage of the defense as forward Sharon Warmus scored a game-high 21 points and had 10 rebounds. Carolyn Osato led the Saxons (10-3) with 14 points.

El Dorado 62, Los Alamitos 43--Jill Matyuch led El Dorado (9-4) with 29 points. Cathy Newvine added 12 points and Joan Pesl had 13.

In Garden Grove League action:

Santiago 42, Los Amigo 24--Sharon Alexander, Liz Lynch and Marci Lynch each scored 10 points to lead the Cavaliers (1-8). Nelly Avila and Maggie Tuia led Los Amigos (1-8) with eight points each.

La Quinta 61, Bolsa Grande 36--The Aztecs made 65% of their shots and clinched their fourth straight league championship. Mellissa Fejdasz of La Quinta (9-0) had a game-high 20 points. Pam Waltz and Kris Takayama added 11 and 10 points, respectively. It was La Quinta’s 41st consecutive league victory.

In Sea View League action:

Corona del Mar 59, Saddleback 47--Guard Fran Wynn had 18 points, 15 rebounds and 15 assists. Corona del Mar’s K.C. Jones led all scorers with 21 points, a personal season-high. Guard Grace Terrado led Saddleback (4-9) with 15 points, most on shots from beyond the 20-foot mark. Corona del Mar is 11-2 in league.

Newport Harbor 37, Costa Mesa 34--Newport Harbor hit 27% of its shots and Costa Mesa hit only 25%. Kristen Drage had 10 points for the Sailors. Costa Mesa’s Suzanne Cowley had a game-high 17 rebounds.

Woodbridge 59, Estancia 23--Sharon Lyon set a school record with 22 rebounds for the Warriors, who clinched the league title with the victory. She also had 18 points and 7 blocked shots. Woodbridge (13-0) outrebounded Estancia, 69-25. Holly Ingraham added 16 points and 17 rebounds. Jill Daniels had 15 rebounds.

In South Coast League action:

Dana Hills 46, Laguna Hills 43--Roberta Forster scored 13 points, had 10 rebounds and 10 assists in the the Dolphins’ last game of the regular season. Sheila McCrea added 15 points for Dana Hills (6-6). Julia Monahan had a game-high 21 points for Laguna Hills (3-8).

El Toro 48, San Clemente 24--Guard Vicki Mallett guard led the Chargers (10-1) with 20 points. Center Jennifer Uecke added 12 points and 11 rebounds. Lynn Kristofferson led San Clemente (0-11) with 8 points.

University 46, Laguna Beach 25--Jean Mao had a game-high 15 points to lead University in the game at home. University (2-11) had a 6-point lead less than a minute into the game and led 20-14 at halftime. Karen Weingarten led the Artists (0-13) with 13 points.

In Sunset League action:

Ocean View 69, Huntington Beach 59--The Sea Hawks’ front line accounted for 57 points. Center Trina Vlachos and forward Michelle Chomicz each had 20 points for Ocean View (8-1). Forward Laura Simek added 17 points. Kelly Murray had a game-high 24 points for Huntington Beach (2-7). Ocean View’s Dana Douty set a school record with 14 assists.

Fountain Valley 58, Edison 40--Forward Jackie Cook had 20 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Barons who remain in a first-place tie with Ocean View.
