PREP BASKETBALL : Boys Roundup : McSweeney Leads Dana Hills Past Laguna Hills

Bryan McSweeney scored 23 points and had 11 rebounds Wednesday night to lead the Dana Hills High School to a 67-56 win over Laguna Hills in South Coast League action at Dana Hills.

The Dolphins came back from a 28-27 halftime deficit to outscore the Hawks, 24-12, in the third quarter en route to the victory.

Guards Will Jeffers and Eddie Esteban added 15 and 14 points, respectively, for Dana Hills (9-3 and 17-5).

El Toro 77, San Clemente 45--The Chargers outscored the Tritons, 13-4, at the outset in their win at El Toro.

Paced by Kelly Moynihan’s 16 points and 10 rebounds, El Toro (6-5, 11-12) methodically pulled away from the Tritons to force a showdown Friday against Capistrano Valley at Saddleback College for the league’s third playoff spot. Every member Charger scored.

San Clemente (3-8, 7-14) was led by Tony Villanueva’s 14 points.

Mission Viejo 82, Irvine 59--The Diablos hit 64% (34 of 53) of their shots and clinched their second straight South Coast League title. Junior Center Tim Knowles scored 20 points and had 6 rebounds to lead the Diablos. Forward Jeff Herdman added 15 points and 7 rebounds.

In Angelus League action:

Servite 67, Bishop Montgomery 66--The Friars’ Bob Coady hit two free throws with four seconds remaining to pull out a win over the Knights.

Bishop Montgomery had gone ahead, 66-65, with four seconds remaining when James Taylor put in a missed shot. Servite (5-4) called timeout and set up an out-of-bounds play. Coady was fouled as he tried to set a screen. After Coady’s free throws, the Knights were forced to take a desperation shot since it had used all its timeouts.

Friars’ Center Matt Honikel led all scorers with 30 points. Forward Tony Smalley added 14 points and 10 rebounds. Guard T.J Wnek led Bishop Montogomery with 20 points.

Mater Dei 101, Bishop Amat 40--The Monarchs clinched their third straight league title with an easy win at home. As usual, Tom Lewis led the way for the Monarchs (9-0, 24-0), with 40 points and 10 rebounds. He scored 29 points in the second half. Forward Mike Mitchell added 27 points and 9 rebounds for Mater Dei.
