Freeway League : Sonora Slowdown Tactics Stop Fullerton, 30-29

Sonora High School used a delay offense Friday night to upset Fullerton, 30-29, in a Freeway League game played at Sonora.

The Raiders (5-5 in league and 8-13 overall) got two crucial free throws from Mike Samuelson, with 11 seconds left to clinch the victory. Samuelson led all scorers with 16 points.

Sonora trailed, 13-8, after one quarter, but then held the Indians (6-4, 15-9) to only two points in the second quarter to take a 16-15 halftime lead. Sonora was in control from that point on.

“Fullerton is so much bigger than we are, we decided to play for just one shot each time down,” Sonora Coach Paul Bottiaux said. “The kids were really patient and did a great job.”

Fullerton was led by Ralph Tallant, who had 11 points.

Troy 50, Sunny Hills 46 (OT)--Steve Welch’s basket and Bill Edwards’ three free throws sealed the victory for Troy (5-5, 10-12).

Mike Lutz led Sunny Hills with 13 points. Troy’s Greg Nelson led all scorers with 17 points.

Buena Park 71, La Habra 66--The league champion Coyotes (8-2, 14-8) led by 19 points in the third quarter and had to hold off a furious rally to beat the Highlanders (2-8, 6-16) at La Habra.

Reggie Brown helped clinch the win for Buena Park by making two key free throws in the final seconds. La Habra had cut Buena Park’s lead to one point, 63-62, with 47 seconds remaining. Auerelio Solis led Buena Park with 20 points and Tony Toscano added 15. Erik Zaluske led La Habra with 18 and Derek Stevens added 16.
