CCAA Swimming Championships : CSUN Women Take Big Lead While Men Trail Bakersfield

The Cal State Northridge women’s swimming team grabbed a commanding lead at the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. championships Wednesday.

The Lady Matadors compiled 313 points after the first day of the three-day competition at Cal State Bakersfield. In second place is Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, with 231 points. Cal State Los Angeles has 88.

Cal State Bakersfield leads the men’s competition with 193 points, followed by Northridge’s 146, Cal Poly SLO’s 88 and Cal State L.A.’s 34.

Northridge’s Michele Hampton captured the women’s 500-yard freestyle race with a time of 5:03.18. Teammate Tracy McCluskey was second at 5:05.5.

In the women’s 200-yard individual medley, CSUN’s Katie McCarthy was third. Her time was 2:16.32.

Sandy Galins helped the Matadors’ cause by finishing second in the women’s 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.44.

The Northridge 200-yard relay team just missed winning its race, finishing second to the Cal Poly SLO women. The times were 1:56:11 and 1:56:80, respectively.

In the men’s competition, Northridge’s Doug Burchell finished second in the 500-yard freestyle event. His time was 4:37.55.
