Kelly Is Winner in State Welterweight Championship Bout
Derrick Kelly of Los Angeles scored an upset victory over defending champion Glenn Corbus of San Jose Thursday night to win the California state welterweight boxing championship at the Forum.
Kelly, who had to lose 1 1/2 pounds immediately before the fight to make the 147-pound weight limit, stopped Corbus 2:59 into the sixth round of the scheduled 12-round fight.
The victory improved Kelly’s record to 12-0-1, while Corbus’ record fell to 16-2.
In a 10-round light-heavyweight bout, Grover Robinson, of Fremont, Calif., stopped Pete McIntyre of Long Beach 2:42 into the final round of their 10-round fight.
Adrian Arreola won a unanimous decision over Kelvin Lampkins in a 10-round fight between two Los Angeles featherweights.
In remaining bouts on the card, Ellis Madrid of San Diego won a six-round decision from Johnny Watkins of Los Angeles in a featherweight fight, and Mauri Saalakahn of Washington D.C., scored a split decision in four rounds over Gregg Triplett of Pasadena in a lightweight bout.
