San Diego Roundup : Legends of Tennis Benefit Tournament Starts Tonight

Rod Laver, Ken Rosewall, and Fred Stolle will be among the players participating in the Foster’s Lager Legends of Tennis benefit tonight, Saturday and Sunday at the Morley Field Tennis Stadium. Matches begin tonight at 6 o’clock and 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

This evening, Rosewall will face Mal Anderson in singles, followed by Rosewall-Gene Scott vs. Laver-Anderson in doubles. Laver will face Scott in singles Saturday afternoon, followed by Rosewall-Anderson vs. Laver-Scott. Sunday’s singles match will feature the winners of the matches played today and Saturday. Rosewall-Laver vs. Anderson-Scott will follow.

The proceeds of the tournament will be used to fund scholarships for the children of San Diego police officers killed in the line of duty.

Martina Navratilova, Billie Jean King, Lloyd Bridges and Carl Reiner are among the tennis players and celebrities expected to compete in the Pro-Am of the Chrysler Women’s Team Championship at the La Costa Hotel and Spa at 7 p.m. Thursday.

The eight-team Pro-Am will pair 16 celebrities with 16 top players. Others expected to compete are Pam Shriver, Hana Mandlikova and celebrities Dick Van Patten, Christopher Atkins, Dwight Stones and Bob Seagren.

Tournament play starts March 1, with one ticket admitting spectators to the 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. sessions. Two matches will be held per session. On March 2, sessions begin at noon. The consolation championship will be held at noon on March 3, with the championship match following at 1:30.

The eighth annual L’Eggs/YMCA women’s 10K run (6.2 miles) will be held in Balboa Park at 8 a.m. Saturday. At 7:45 a.m., there will a quarter-mile fun run for girls seven and under. Following the start of the 10K race, there will be a two-mile fun run.

The college with the most students participating in the 10K run will be awarded a $2,500 scholarship by the Hanes Group. The scholarship is to benefit women’s amateur athletics.

The Cuervo Mardi Gras 10K run and walk, a benefit for the San Diego County Safety Council, will be held Sunday morning south of the Hilton Hotel on Mission Bay. Runners can sign up for the run between 5:45 and 7:15 a.m. at the starting line. The race begins at 7:30. Prizes will be awarded for the best individual, team and couples costumes.
