Firefighters gave up trying to battle two brush fires that merged into one near Florida's Alligator Alley as officials foresaw three more months of the "bigger, tougher and meaner" blazes that have scorched more than 100,000 acres this year. Before merging, the two fires blackened at least 1,000 acres several miles from an Indian reservation in the Everglades. Officials said that they would let the merged fire burn itself out.
