Aztec Women’s Volleyball Team Gets Letters From Three Northwest Players

San Diego State women’s volleyball Coach Rudy Suwara believes that his Northwest connection has brought two potential All-Americans to SDSU.

Monday, Suwara announced he had received letters of intent from three high school seniors.

Amy Erben, a 6-foot 1-inch starting middle blocker for three years at Evergreen High School in Seattle, was a first team All-League selection as a junior and senior. Erben had a 57% hitting percentage as a senior.

“Hitting over 50% is unreal,” Suwara said. “She has a real good vertical jump. Her high school coach thinks she is actually one or two years ahead of Vicki Cantrell.”

Cantrell attended Kent High in Kent, Wash., before attaining All-American status at SDSU in 1982 and 1983.

Kris Morton, a 6-4 middle blocker from Thurston High in Eugene, Ore., has also agreed to join the Aztecs. Morton was named the Most Valuable Player in her district, and selected to the All-District and All-State first teams.

“She has the potential to be a national quality player and to play on the U.S. Olympic team,” Thurston High Coach Juan Weiseth said.

Erben and Morton will be joined by Jackie Mendez, a 5-10 left side player from Westminster High. Mendez was a first team All-League selection.
