State Sen. Paul Carpenter (D-Norwalk) will hold a public hearing today on cleanup proposals for Waste Disposal Inc., an abandoned dump near St. Paul High School that is ranked 39th on a state Department of Health Services list of 180 worst toxic waste sites.
Preliminary tests at the 37-acre site, which was used as a dump by the oil industry from 1928 to 1965, discovered petroleum, benzene and phenol, a flammable chemical.
Representatives of the state health department and Toxic Waste Management Board will answer questions about the dump at the 8 p.m hearing in the California High School gymnasium, 9800 South Mills Ave., Whittier.
