PCAA Roundup : Utah State Adds to Long Beach’s List of Losses
Cal State Long Beach lost its 22nd game of the season Thursday night, this time an 81-69 setback to Utah State in front of a crowd of 1,015 in the 49ers’ gym.
The 49ers, who will end their season Saturday with the worst record in school history, were plagued by poor shooting.
“We had a lot of shots,” Long Beach Coach Ron Palmer said. “Our percentage of missed shots around the basket would be astounding.”
Not only did the 49ers have a lot of shots (72), they had a lot more than Utah State (48). The Aggies, however, made most of theirs.
Utah State, concentrating on sharp passing to produce layups, shot 62.5%, while the 49ers shot 34.7%.
Utah State pulled away from a 36-32 halftime lead behind senior guard Vince Washington, who scored 17 of his 24 points in the second half. Forward Greg Grant added 19 points and had six blocked shots.
Senior Darryl Adams, playing his last home game, scored 25 points for Long Beach, but when he tired in the second half, the 49er offense disappeared.
The 49ers, who finish their season Saturday at Nevada Las Vegas, are 4-22 overall and 2-15 in the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn.
Utah State is 16-10 and 9-8.
