El Segundo, Orange Units Win SARA Design Awards

A commissary building for the U.S. Air Force Space Division in El Segundo and a business park in Orange are among the four national winners of First Honor Awards presented by the Society of American Registered Architects (SARA) in its annual Professional Design Awards competition.

Designed by Oscar E. Leidenfrost of Leidenfrost/Horowitz & Associates of Burbank for the U.S. Air Force, the commissary won in the category for institutional projects valued at more than $3.5 million. (The project has also received the Small Business Administration’s Administrator’s Award for Excellence and an award of excellence from the San Fernando valley section of the Los Angeles chapter of the American Institute of Architects.)

The Orange/Lewis Business Park in Orange, designed by Gilbert Aja & Associates of Laguna Hills, won in the category for commercial projects between $1 million and $3.5 million in value.

The other First Honor Award winners were in Maine and Washington state. Thirteen design projects were honored by the society this year out of a total of nearly 100 entries submitted from all parts of the country.

Other California winners include Village at Indian Wells, designed by McClellan/Cruz/Gaylord & Associates of Los Angeles, which won a Third Honor Award for commercial and industrial projects valued at more than $3.5 million; Jean Ellen Manufacturing Co. in Cypress, designed by Gilbert Aja & Associates, which won a Second Honor Award for commercial projects worth $1 million to $3.5 million, and the Shigezawa residence on Oahu in Hawaii, designed by Foothill Design Group of Marysville, which took a Second Honor Award for housing projects worth less than $1 million.

Projects of 19 California architects were honored at the recent annual design awards program of the California Council, Society of American Registered Architects.

An honor award, the highest, went to Hope Consulting Group for its Columbia Center office building in San Diego. Awards of excellence went to: Heritage Financial Center, designed by McCune Gerwin & Partners Inc.; Gateway 3, designed by Maxwell Starkman Associates for Cadillac Fairview Inc.; Great American Corporate Center, designed by Leason Pomeroy Associates; Harborgate, a commercial/retail complex designed by Herbert Nadel & Partners; Cordova Village, a shopping center designed by Foothill Design Group and the Student Dining Hall at UCLA, designed by Leidenfrost/Horowitz & Associates.

Eleven other architectural firms were given awards of merit and two special awards for photography went to Larry Robbins of Robbins, Bown & Hollander Inc. and Charles S. McCune of McCune Gerwin & Partners Inc.
