Candidates’ Debates Slated Down to Wire

A series of candidates’ debates and meetings has been scheduled for the next two weeks in anticipation of Glendale’s April 2 municipal election.

The League of Women Voters’ traditional candidates’ forums will begin on Monday, with candidates for both the Unified School District Board of Education and the Glendale College Board of Trustees. That program is scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Central Library auditorium, 222 E. Harvard St.

On March 18, the league will hold its candidates’ night for the City Council and city treasurer races, starting at 7 p.m. at the library auditorium.

Questions, Answers

At both sessions, candidates will answer questions posed by a panel of league officials and reporters. Members of the audience may submit written questions.

Other forums for candidates are being organized by community and business groups.

Candidates will field questions tonight from members of the local chapter of the Building Industry Assn. and the Glendale Board of Realtors at the Verdugo Club, 400 W. Glenoaks Blvd. A cocktail hour will start at 6:30. A dinner and the political program will begin at 7:30. Tickets for the dinner are $20 each and can be obtained through the New Image public relations firm, 240-2290.

Three seats are up for grabs on the City Council. The six candidates include John F. Day and Ginger Bremberg, both incumbents; Mark A. Doyle, a sociology professor at Glendale Community College; Larry Lousen, a graphic artist; William Mulvihill, a teacher, and Carl W. Raggio, president of the Unified School District.

City Clerk Unopposed

City Clerk Merle H. Hagemeyer is running unopposed for the third time. City Treasurer Elizabeth Evans, who was appointed in December to fill an unexpired term, is seeking election for a full term. She is opposed by banker Lynn P. McGinnis.

Two incumbents, June Sweetnam and Jane Whitaker, and two challengers, Charles Whitesell and Richard N. Matthews, are running for the three seats on the Unified School District board.

Three college board incumbents are unopposed for reelection.
