UC San Diego Hits Early and Late, but it Can’t Beat San Diego State, 11-6
After spotting UC San Diego a, 2-0, lead in the first inning, San Diego State came back to beat the Tritons, 11-6, in a game on Thursday at SDSU’s Smith Field.
UCSD hit Aztecs starter Steve Mills for three hits and two runs in the first inning. Kevin Piper (1-0) took over for the Aztecs (13-7) and shutout UCSD (10-7-1) over the next three innings to pick up the win.
The Aztecs tied the game with a two-run third inning. In the fourth, Steve Montejano singled and Robbie Knowles walked. John Richardson doubled home Montejano with what proved to be the winning run. Steve Hill knocked in Knowles with a sacrifice fly to give SDSU a 4-2 lead.
The Aztecs put the game away with a four-run fifth inning and added two in the sixth and one in the seventh. UCSD scored its final four runs in the eighth inning. The Aztecs will play host to Cal Poly Pomona in a doubleheader on Saturday at 3 p.m.
