Two Referees to Be Used
Following last year’s stormy final, two referees are to be used for the $235,000 Queens Club grass court tennis tournament in June.
After John McEnroe had defeated Jimmy Connors in a bad-tempered final, Australian referee Jim Moore admitted he had preferred to take a soft line with the players.
This time, Moore will be assisted by Mike Lugg who will have overall responsibility for players’ behavior at the pre-Wimbledon tournament, leaving Moore to concentrate on the administrative side.
Tournament Director Clive Bernstein confirmed that McEnroe, who has not lost a singles match in Britain since the 1983 Queens Club final, would defend his title and that Jimmy Connors also will play.
Ivan Lendl and Mats Wilander, both slow court specialists, both have said they will play although they will not enter directly. Bernstein said the two players had requested wild cards which almost certain were to be granted.
Bernstein also confirmed that among the doubles teams would be Ken Flach and Robert Suguso, the new American world doubles champions.
