Terry Kennedy had a three-run homer Sunday to lead the Padres to a 6-3 exhibition win over the Chicago Cubs.

It was only the fourth exhibition victory for the defending National League champions in 15 games.

Andy Hawkins, whose pitching in the World Series was the team’s sole highlight, allowed one run in six innings to gain the victory.

Loser Scott Sanderson, who gave up Kennedy’s homer in the fourth after a walk to Al Bumbry and left fielder Gary Matthew’s error on a fly ball by Tony Gwynn, had to cut short his outing after five innings because of a groin muscle pull.

Jerry Davis, Kurt Bevacqua and pinch hitter James Steels drove in the other Padre runs with RBI singles.

Chicago’s Brian Dayett drove in two runs with a double and Leon Durham’s single accounted for the third Cub run.
