The Region : Park’s Condor Egg Dies

Share

One of two California condor eggs taken to the San Diego Wild Animal Park for incubation has been declared dead by park officials. The egg was officially determined to be “inactive” after it had shown no noticeable development for five days, park spokesman Tom Hanscom said. “We did find some development of membranes, but no embryo,” Hanscom said. He added that samples from the egg would be analyzed to determine why it failed to develop. Loss of the egg is another setback in the program to save the endangered California condor. Last week, officials confirmed that they had lost track of three of five known breeding pairs of wild condors. Hanscom said the remaining condor egg at the park is developing normally and should hatch by April 15.
