Dead-Heat Finish Nets Pincay Two Ties in One Race at Santa Anita

Laffit Pincay rode Jell to a dead-heat for first place with Frannie Merete in the ninth race at Santa Anita Friday for his 6,032nd career victory, tying Johnny Longden for second place in the all-time jockey standings.

Pincay, 38, began riding in this country in 1966, a few months after Longden’s farewell victory ride aboard George Royal in the San Juan Capistrano Handicap at Santa Anita.

Longden, 78, remains active as a trainer at Santa Anita.

Bill Shoemaker, still active at 53, is the all-time leader with 8,455 victories.

In Friday’s featured race, Painted Canyon, ridden by Gary Stevens, took command going into the stretch to win the $45,000 Charles Whittingham Stakes.

Painted Canyon finished 3 1/2 lengths in front of Spectacular Love, ridden by Pincay. Rising Chum, ridden by Rick Dominguez, was third.

Painted Canyon ran the 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:14 1/5.

Sent off as the second choice, Painted Canyon paid $7.20, $3.40 and $3.20. Spectacular Love, the even-money favorite, returned $2.80 and $2.60, and Rising Chum paid $5.60 to show.
