Kelly Errors Help Stars Top Gamblers
Quarterback Chuck Fusina passed for 310 yards and the Baltimore Stars converted two second-half Jim Kelly turnovers into touchdowns to hand the previously undefeated Houston Gamblers a 27-14 loss Sunday before an Astrodome crowd of 24,166.
Kelly, the USFL’s leading passer, threw two interceptions in the third quarter and lost a fumble and an interception in the fourth as the Baltimore defense applied pressure to Houston’s pass-oriented run and shoot offense.
Mike Lush intercepted two Kelly passes, returning one 56 yards for a touchdown that gave Baltimore, the defending USFL champions, the lead for good, 17-14, with 4:07 left in the third quarter.
Fusina completed 18-of-31 passes and was three yards short of the Baltimore team record for total passing yardage. Kelly completed 33 of 51 for 393 yards.
Houston is 5-1, while the Stars are 2-3-1.
Denver 21, Orlando 17--Vince Evans threw two second-half touchdown passes and ran for a third Sunday to rally the Gold past the winless Renegades at Denver.
The Renegades (0-6) controlled the ball for 12 1/2 minutes of the first quarter and led, 17-0, at halftime on quarterback Reggie Collier’s touchdown runs of one and three yards and a 35-yard field goal by Jeff Brockhaus.
Evans brought the Gold (4-2) back with touchdown passes of 11 yards to Vincent White and six to Bill Johnson. He also scored from a yard out.
