Mara E. Lazdans, a junior cross-country runner at Cal State Northridge, was killed when her car and another collided head-on early Sunday, the California Highway Patrol said Monday.

The driver of the other car was booked for investigation of manslaughter, CHP Officer Phil Lammi said.

Lazdans, 20, was driving southbound about 2:30 a.m. on State Route 71 about 10 miles south of Ontario when a northbound vehicle crossed over the center line, Lammi said.

Lazdans’ car was thrown about 100 feet and slid down an embankment, Lammi said.

Blain A. Hammond, 26, of Chino was taken into custody by officers from the Ontario CHP office and booked, Lammi said.

She was named All-America after placing in the top 25 of the NCAA Division II Cross Country track meet this year.
