Woman Killed --Pushed Into Subway’s Path
A young woman standing on a subway platform was pushed to her death beneath a train at the start of today’s morning rush hour, and a suspect escaped after being chased by witnesses, police said.
The woman was waiting for a train in the Union Square Station in Manhattan at about 6:45 a.m. when a man pushed her in front of a Brooklyn-bound train “for no apparent reason,” Transit Authority Lt. Robert O’Neil said.
“She was standing on one side of a metal pillar. He was standing on the other side,” said authority Capt. Ralph Jensen. “As the train entered the station he walked behind her and pushed her onto the track.”
There was “no argument--no words were passed,” Jensen said at a news conference. He said police do not believe the victim and her killer knew each other.
Jensen said several witnesses chased the man up the stairs and out onto the street, where transit officer James McCarron joined the chase.
A pastry truck driver offered McCarron the use of his vehicle, but the man had escaped.
