College Baseball : Turner Extends Hitting Streak in Fullerton Win

Cal State Fullerton scored five runs in the first four innings of Wednesday night’s game against UCLA, and held on for a 5-4 victory at Titan Field.

Shortstop Shane Turner had two hits to extend his streak to 23 games, tying the Fullerton school record set by Mike Vanderburg in 1982 and tied by Tom Thomas in 1983.

The Titans (19-19-1) scored a run in the second inning on Andy Nieto’s RBI single and a took a 2-0 advantage in the third when Jose Mota squeezed home Blaine Larker.

Fullerton, which has beaten the Bruins in 18 of 24 games, put together a three-run fourth inning. Nieto and Larker had RBIs, and Kevin Reimer scored on a fielding error for a 5-0 lead.

UCLA’s second hit of the game came in the fifth inning when Shawn Berry hit a solo home run off winning pitcher Dion Beck (6-6). The Bruins (22-19) scored three more runs in the sixth.

In other action:

Southern California College 9, UC Irvine, 5--The Vanguards overtook Irvine with four runs in the fifth inning at Anteater Stadium. UCI (16-14-1) held a 5-2 advantage after four innings as Mike Sugar had run-scoring double in the second inning and an RBI single in the third.

But the Vanguards, who beat the Anteaters last season and tied them, 6-6, in February, took a 6-5 lead in the fifth after Pat Price hit a two-run double against UCI left-hander Robbie Johnson (2-1). SCC (23-12-3) scored three runs in the top of the ninth to cement the victory for pitcher Edwardo Andrews (6-2).
