College Baseball : Titans Score Eight in Ninth for First Tournament Victory

First baseman Kevin Reimer had three hits and drove in three runs, including a tie-breaking single during an eight-run ninth inning, as Cal State Fullerton defeated No. 2 Oklahoma, 12-4, on Sunday to conclude the Sooner Shootout college baseball tournament.

Shane Turner also had three hits for the Titans (20-22-1) who had lost in their previous three games in the round-robin tournament. Jeff Farber and Rich Slominski each had two RBIs for Fullerton.

Oklahoma (27-5) had won its previous three games in the tournament by staging late comebacks. This time, it was the Titans’ turn.

The Sooners grabbed a 2-1 lead in the second inning on an RBI single by Joe Jordan and a sacrifice fly by Chris Stull.

Fullerton regained the lead, 4-2, with three runs in the fifth, including run-scoring singles by Farber and Reimer. The Sooners tied the game at 4-4 in the seventh inning on a single by Scott Ferguson and an RBI liner to right by Jim Richardson.

But the Titans secured the victory with eight runs in the ninth on three hits and six walks. Reimer broke the tie with an RBI single to right and Slominski had a two-run single up the middle.

Ferguson and Jordan each had three hits for Oklahoma.

Dion Beck (7-6) went the distance for the sixth time this year to earn the victory. Reliever David Johnson (1-2) took the loss.
