Michael Nunn spends hours of sparing for a fight. But he needed only two punches Thursday night.

It was the second, a powerful right hook, that ended a brief night of work.

Nunn scored a technical knockout over Sergio Campos of Tucson at 1:57 of the first round in a scheduled six-round middleweight bout at the Showboat Hotel and Sports Pavillion.

The win was the second two-punch knockout for Nunn in 15 days. Nunn demolished Robert Jackson in 1:22 of the first round at the Country Club in Reseda on March 27.

Nunn was an alternate for the U.S. Olympic team last year but is making the most of his pro bouts.

Thursday’s fight was a preliminary bout on ESPN’s fifth anniversary monthly fight card. Lightweight Chris Calvin scored a 10th-round technical knockout over previously unbeaten Brett Summers in the main event. Nunn, however, did not use that much television time.

In all reality, Nunn--4-0, all by knockouts--had more of a workout in practice.

Campos (5-5) came out swinging wildly, throwing about 15 punches, connecting on none. Nunn’s first opening came about a minute and one-half into the fight, when a solid left hook sent Campos to the canvas.

“This guy is the kind of fighter who is looking for one punch that could have knocked me out,” Nunn said. “I knew I just had to take my time and look for the right opening.”

After an eight-count, Campos came back at Nunn, still swinging and still missing.

Nunn jabbed some more, then buried the 162 1/2-pound Campos in the ropes.

Referee James Molinell stopped the bout.

Nunn already was looking forward to his next fight which manager Dan Goossen said would be sometime in late May.

“I really don’t care how long the fight lasts. I trained for this fight like it was 15 rounds,” said Nunn. “I got a knockout and I kept my record perfect. That’s what I wanted.”

Goossen said Nunn will fight in Los Angeles on May 21.
