Share

A literary magazine published by students at Huntington Park High School has received an award of excellence from the National Council of Teachers of English. “The Book” is one of seven literary magazines at three junior and four senior highs in the Los Angeles Unified School District to receive awards from the council for the 1983-84 school year.

Now in its third year, “The Book” is published at Huntington Park High every June 1 by more than 100 student writers, editors, illustrators, printers and layout artists. The 108-page award-winning entry includes short stories on death and first love, essays on television game shows, education in society and overpaid athletes and a poem about the moon, said faculty adviser Elizabeth Tombs.

Statewide, 66 school magazines received awards in categories of “highest award,” “superior,” “excellent” and “above average.” In the nationwide judging, points are given for imaginative use of language in poetry, fiction, nonfiction and drama and for editing, layout and design.
