SAVING NETWORK TV: THE PEOPLE RESPOND

The Calendar Letters Page on April 14 appealed--in all semi-seriousness--to the reader-masses for fresh, new ideas to help save network television. The generosity of readers has been ample and heartwarming. The least frivolous contributions are segregated in the box at the right. The rest follow.

Shows I was surprised not to find in your list of series proposals:

“Detroit”--This new soap promises to be the sizzler of the season. The power struggles behind a Michigan K Mart store is the basic plot line of this Aaron Spelling-produced night-time drama. Questions the audience will ask: Will Frieda (Rita Moreno) sleep with her boss (McLean Stevenson) in order to become head of junior sportswear? Will “young” Roxanne (Suzanne Somers) be fired after announcing a “blue-light special” too soon?

“The Crosby Show”--ABC attempts to confuse viewers with this half-hour sitcom scheduled strategically on Thursdays at 8 p.m. The show stars Mary Crosby as a young hotel maid who decides to impersonate a wealthy black lawyer in hopes of giving birth to comically obnoxious teen-agers. Kim Fields, Gary Coleman and Alfanso Riebero co-star.
