San Diego
A San Diego City Council committee Monday endorsed a plan to oust derelict boats from local anchorages.
About 470 of 600 vessels now anchored around San Diego Bay are expected to meet the San Diego Unified Port District’s new “seaworthiness” standards. Those that fail will not be permitted to anchor in the bay.
As outlined by port commissioner Bill Rick, the boats must maintain proper sanitary facilities and they must have some sort of motor. Also, if they store surplus material, they must do so below deck.
“There are a lot of hulks out on our bay,” Rick said.
By a 4-0 vote, the council’s Rules Committee endorsed the effort.
