Prep HIGHLIGHTS : Burroughs Draws Only Blanks Against Day, Loses Without a Hit

Burbank High’s Debby Day tossed a no-hitter Tuesday, shutting out Burroughs, 4-0, and handed no-hit specialist Christy Alves her third loss.

It marked the Indians’ first Foothill League defeat, bringing the teams’ league records to 3-1 and tied for first place.

Day (9-2) struck out 12 and walked three. She also contributed to the Burbank offense with a sacrifice fly in the second inning.

Two Burroughs errors and Christy Calderon’s two-run single in the first inning gave Burbank an early lead. The Indians, however, couldn’t manage to hit the ball out of the infield.

Alves, who had thrown three straight no-hitters this season, is 10-3.

Chatsworth 9, Monroe 7

The Chancellors’ had three runs in the first inning and four runs in the fifth inning in their second North Valley league victory. Winning pitcher Jill Clemens (2-1) gave up five hits and seven runs.

Kennedy 2, Granada Hills 0

Kennedy took an early lead and the victory on Kathy Swope’s two-run triple in the first inning and a Krissy Erickson RBI in the second. Golden Cougar pitcher Pauline Madrid, who struck out six batters, got her fourth win of the season.

Cleveland 12, Reseda 1

The Cavaliers stole 11 bases and managed runs in every inning except the fourth en route to a 12-1 victory over the Regents at Reseda. Kim Green had two hits and three stolen bases. Pitcher Michelle Van Kirk, Kim Inglett, Techia Foster and Chris Elvine had two hits and two stolen bases each.

Chaminade 12, Bell-Jeff 1

Kris Iwafuchi pitched a two hitter, striking out six and walking none as the Eagles got their sixth San Fernando Valley league victory of the season. Melissa Ingalls had two hits and three RBIs.

North Hollywood 5, Grant 1

Tim Driscoll pitched a complete game and lowered his earned run average to 1.00 as North Hollywood beat Grant in an East Valley League game at home.

Driscoll (3-3), had eight strikeouts and scattered eight hits.

Peter Washington led North Hollywood at the plate with two hits and three runs batted in.

Steve Bernstein accounted for Grant’s lone run with a homer in the third inning.

North Hollywood is 7-3 in league. Grant is 8-3.

Verdugo Hills 4, Sylmar 3

A throwing error by Sylmar third baseman Rod Ruiz enabled Verdugo Hills to score two runs in the seventh inning and win the East Valley League game at Sylmar.

Sylmar was leading 3-2, with two outs and runners on second and third when Ruiz made an errant throw to first after fielding a ground ball.

Sylmar (9-2) remains on top of the league standings despite the loss.

Verdugo Hills is 4-6 in league.

Chatsworth 10, Canoga Park 1

Marc Pfeiffer hit a two-run homer to cap a seven-run, third inning rally as Chatsworth won at home and solidified its position a top West Valley League standings.

Glenn Stevenson had three hits and three RBIs for Chatsworth.

Winning pitcher Bill Berry hurled a complete game and struck out nine.

Chatsworth is 6-1. Canoga Park is 2-5.

San Fernando 8, Birmingham 7

George Villela’s triple, in the bottom of the seventh inning, drove in the winning run and gave San Fernando its fourth straight victory in a Mid Valley League game at home.

San Fernando (4-3) almost went ahead in the sixth inning, but Roy Mijares’ two-run inside-the-park home run was disallowed when the umpire cited Mijares for failing to touch third base.

Kennedy 22, Van Nuys 1

Kennedy broke a three-game losing streak by producing a twelve-run second inning en route to a Mid Valley League victory at home.

Kennedy pounded out 19 hits and was led by George Gonzalez, who had three hits and four RBIs. Greg Synnott and Kevin Farlow had two hits apiece.

Eric Evans pitched three innings and earned the win.

Kennedy is 4-3 in league. Van Nuys is 1-6.

St. Genevieve 15, Murphy 7

Arnold Durazo had three hits, three RBIs, two stolen bases and four runs scored as St. Genevieve won its eighth straight, in a Santa Fe League game at Branford Park in Arleta.

St. Genevieve outfielder Mauricio Guardado upped his batting average to .471 with two hits.

Oscar Garcia pitched 5 innings to earn the win.

St. Genevieve (6-1) is tied for first in league with Chaminade.

Bell-Jeff 9, Pater Noster 4

Kevin Day slugged a first inning, two-run homer as Bell-Jeff beat Pater Noster in a Santa Fe League game at home.

Fernando Guana had two hits, two RBIs, three runs scored and four stolen bases for Bell-Jeff.

Larry Cormier earned the win by pitching a complete game and striking out six.

Bell-Jeff is 6-2 in league. Pater Noster is 4-4.
