One man was shot to death, another was hospitalized and a third was still at large Monday night after National City police chased their car into Southeast San Diego after a grocery store holdup.

A Life Flight spokesman said one suspect was declared dead at the scene and the other was taken to Paradise Valley Hospital in National City. Officials there were still evaluating the man’s condition, though his injuries were not believed to be serious.

San Diego police set up a command post after 11 p.m. at 32nd Street and Ocean View Boulevard to search for the third suspect.

The robbery occurred about 10 p.m. at an Alpha Beta store at 1035 Harbison Ave. in National City. “The good guys at the store” followed the getaway car to North Kenton and Division, National City police Officer Clint McKenzie said, until the car’s occupants fired at them. National City police picked up the chase there, McKenzie said, and the men led them into San Diego.

At 32nd and Ocean View, the suspects jumped out of their car “and two of them got shot,” McKenzie said. When asked who shot the unidentified suspects, McKenzie said, “I can’t divulge that right now.”
