A Gesture by Garvey Won Him Another Fan
Scott Ostler’s column on Steve Garvey recalled an incident I witnessed during the pro-am of the Los Angeles Open golf tournament this year. On the eleventh hole, Steve chipped a shot from off the green into the hole to loud applause.
A lady, who could have been someone’s grandmother, was seated on the grass in front of me just off the edge of the green. As Garvey walked by the lady, he stopped, smiled, bent over and planted a kiss on her cheek. It had to be a spur-of-the-moment thing, but it made that lady’s day and it made Steve Garvey a thousand new fans.
