20 Injured When Truck Overturns

Twenty people were injured Wednesday, three seriously, when a truck that was smuggling aliens went out of control and flipped over at Rancho California and Inez roads in Riverside County, authorities said.

The water truck, which is used at construction sites and which had been stolen from Carlsbad, contained 32 men ages 16 to 41, authorities said. According to the California Highway Patrol, the truck was headed down Inez Road when it went out of control and ran through a stop sign. As the driver attempted to turn left onto Rancho California Road, the truck flipped over, landing right side up, authorities said.

Those men not hospitalized were turned over to the Immigration and Naturalization Service to be deported. The driver of the truck, whom Border Patrol agents believed to be a professional alien smuggler, fled on foot.
