‘Water Squatters’

Share

Quoted from the Monday, May 6 San Diego County Edition of The Times: “Set aside decades ago as a free anchorage for visiting boats, the basin harbors 240 boats.” That’s an understatement in numbers. They are permanent “freeloaders of the U.S. government.” Granted, they are nice, friendly people, but why should they have free moorage and clutter the harbors so we other boaters cannot leave our expensive dock moorage because of no place to “swing on the hook” for one night occasionally?

We have owned a boat four years now and are forced to sell because of its expense and the lack of a place to go for a weekend. The last three times in Glorietta Bay, “water squatters” yelled for fear we’d pull up their anchors. Why are they privileged?

It’s time the San Diego Unified Port district acted. We’ll have a Kowloon-Hong Kong harbor soon.
