Sutcliffe Will Be Out for 15 Days

Rick Sutcliffe, the Chicago Cubs’ Cy Young Award winner who suffered a hamstring injury Sunday, was put on the 15-day disabled list Monday.

The right-hander injured his left hamstring in a 3-0 loss at Atlanta as he ran to first base trying to avoid a double play in the second inning. His injury was diagnosed as a tear in the hamstring.

“I didn’t know a hamstring existed until yesterday,” Sutcliffe said. “I heal quick. Back in 1977 I had a back problem and doctors told me I’d be out for a year. I was back pitching two weeks later.”

Motorcycle racer Wes Cooley, injured Saturday when he crashed during a restart of the Superbike race at Sears Point International Raceway in Sonoma, Calif., was listed in serious condition at Sonoma Valley Hospital.

Cooley, of Ramona, Calif., was earlier listed in critical condition with multiple fractures of both legs and other injuries suffered when his motorcycle ran off the course and slammed into the hillside bordering Turn 1.

Cooley won the American Motorcyclist Assn.’s Superbike title in 1979 and 1980.

Turn 1 also claimed the life of sidecar pilot Michael J. Parkinson of Chico, Calif., who was tossed from his rig Sunday during the sidecar final.

More than 160 people in Manchester, England, were given first aid Sunday when an estimated crowd of 500,000 welcomed home Manchester United after the English League soccer team won the F.A. Cup over First Division champion Everton at Wembley Stadium Saturday.

Twelve fans were hospitalized as a result of the welcome. Four had heart attacks, two had broken legs, one a suspected broken neck and the rest included a concussion, severe bruising and other injuries.

One man fell out of a tree.

The $1-million bonus, introduced three years ago for winning tennis’ Grand Slam, will be scrapped when the present contract expires at the end of this year’s U.S. Open, the International Tennis Federation announced.

ITF President Philippe Chatrier said: “While we were all thrilled and delighted when Martina Navratilova collected her $1-million bonus at the French championships last year when she was also the reigning Wimbledon, U.S. Open and Australian champion, we have decided that the bonus offer should not be renewed.

Former San Francisco Examiner sports columnist Prescott Sullivan died Sunday night in a Daly City convalescent hospital. He was 79.

According to the Examiner, playwright Neil Simon patterned his Oscar Madison character in “The Odd Couple” after Sullivan, who wore his hat in the office, chewed or smoked a cigar and always had a cluttered desk.
