Council OKs Panel on Van Nuys Airport
The Los Angeles City Council Tuesday requested that the city Airport Commission establish a citizens advisory committee on matters arising from the operation of Van Nuys Airport.
The move, approved unanimously and without discussion, was initiated by Councilman John Ferraro after he attended a council committee hearing on Van Nuys Airport in April that brought out about 300 people, evenly divided between airport critics and supporters. They clashed over issues such as noise and safety.
The airport commission already has a citizens’ advisory committee. But, Ferraro said, “it is comprised of representatives from all parts of Los Angeles, and must deal with all facets of airport operations, including LAX (Los Angeles International Airport) and cannot devote sufficient time to matters arising from the operations of Van Nuys airport.”
The council asked that the committee be made up of people who live and work near Van Nuys Airport, including representatives of business and homeowners’ groups. But the council left it to the commission to decide who and how many people should be named to the panel.
