A Chula Vista man was arrested on suspicion of murder Tuesday night after a Grossmont College professor was found shot to death in the man’s apartment.

David McKay, 50, was booked into County Jail early Wednesday morning, several hours after sheriff’s deputies found Janette Harris Reints, 49, lying dead on the floor of McKay’s apartment, a sheriff’s department spokesman said. She had been killed by gunshot wounds to the chest and abdomen, according to deputy coroner Everett Mauger. Sheriff’s deputies said they found a small-caliber handgun in the apartment.

McKay called sheriff’s deputies at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday night to report an accidental shooting. The man, reported to be Reints’ ex-boyfriend, was arrested after being interrogated by sheriff’s homicide detectives.

Reints, a native of Coronado, was a professor of business and coordinator of office administration at Grossmont College, according to Michelle Nelson, the college’s dean of business and vocational training. Reints had taught at the school since 1974. In January, she was commended for her teaching by the Greater San Diego Business Council.
