Coghlan to Run in Berkeley, Then Go to Europe

Eamonn Coghlan of Ireland, nicknamed the “Chairman of the Boards,” will run in the Foot Locker mile June 23, at the University of California’s Edwards Stadium in Berkeley.

The Foot Locker Summer Games also will include the Pacific Conference Games. The latter is a five-nation meet involving national teams from the United States, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and Canada.

It will will mark the first time the five-nation even has been held in the U.S.

Added to the national team competition will be nine world-class events, including the mile. Coghlan is a living legend in the indoor mile, being the only man in history to run under 3:50 indoors, that being his world record of 3:49.79.

The 31-year-old Irish great was unbeaten indoors this season. But he suffered an ankle injury early in the outdoor season and decided to open his 1985 outdoor campaign at the Foot Locker and then head for the major European meets.

Coghlan is a past winner of the Kinney mile, which was the predecessor of the Foot Locker meet. It was decided Foot Locker more exemplifies the California competition, therefore the name change.
