PGA Tour Will Have Different Look in ’86

Share

The Crosby clambake doesn’t have a name, the San Diego Open has a new name, the Tournament of Champions has a new date and the Los Angeles Open will close the Western tour, a review of the 1986 PGA schedule reveals.

The PGA lists Jan. 30 to Feb. 2 as the date for a national pro-am at Pebble Beach, “name unknown.” To anyone who has ever been there, it will always be the Crosby. However, for the PGA, it may be the AT&T; Pro-Am, or some other such corporate event.

San Diego, which has gone through a gamut of names from San Diego Open to Andy Williams San Diego Open to Wickes Andy Williams San Diego Open to Isuzu Andy Williams San Diego Open has stretched its name to the limit. Imagine fitting this in a headline: Shearson Lehman Brothers Andy Williams San Diego Open. Whatever the name, it will be Feb. 6-9 at Torrey Pines.

The Los Angeles Open, sponsored by the L.A. Junior Chamber of Commerce, as it has been since it began, is still defying the trend toward corporate sponsorship. The Feb. 20-23 tournament at Riviera is still the plain old Los Angeles Open.

One of the best moves made by Deane Beman since becoming commissioner is the switch of the Tournament of Champions to the leadoff spot, Jan. 8-11. It is the ideal time to showcase all the winners of the previous year and will give the new season a championship kickoff.

Other West Coast tournaments include the Bob Hope Classic, Jan. 15-19, with the final round at La Quinta Country Club; the Phoenix Open Jan. 23-26 and the Hawaiian Open Feb. 13-16.

The second stage of the countdown to the United States Open is set for Monday, June 3, at Jack Nicklaus’ Bear Creek Golf Club, just south of Lake Elsinore.

From a record original entry of 5,353 players, 600 remain for sectional qualifying at 12 sites, including Bear Creek. From that number, 105 will earn a starting time in the Open, June 13-16, on the South course of the Oakland Hills Country Club in Birmingham, Mich.

The 51 others in the Open field of 156 are fully exempt players such as defending champion Fuzzy Zoeller, former winners Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson and Lee Trevino; Masters champion Bernhard Langer and U. S. Amateur champion Scott Verplank.
