The pilot of a single-engine plane died and his passenger was injured Sunday night after they crashed in a canyon area behind Moorpark College in Ventura County, authorities said.

Ventura County sheriff’s deputies identified the two as pilot Rick Wallman, 32, of Thousand Oaks and Pat Perry, 34, of Woodland Hills.

They were taken by a county sheriff’s helicopter to Los Robles Regional Medical Center in Thousand Oaks, where the pilot died, the deputies said.

The wreckage was spotted at 7:55 p.m. after searchers were alerted by an emergency transmitter aboard the downed plane, said sheriff’s Lt. Joe Harwell.

Personnel at Scott Air Force Base near East St. Louis, Ill., were able to closely approximate the aircraft’s location, he said. A passenger on an Alaska Airlines flight also sighted the aircraft perched on the edge of a cliff in the area, Harwell said.

The pleasure flight had originated in Camarillo.
