Foyt Two Laps Short of Milestone

Share

When A. J. Foyt climbed out of his car Sunday and unsuccessfully tried to fix it himself, he was only five miles short of reaching 10,000 miles of racing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

A.J., who said he plans to retire after his 30th Indy 500 in 1987, needs two laps next year, or sometime, to reach the remarkable milestone.

When he pulled into the pits with a flapping right front wing on lap 62, he waited impatiently as a crew member tried to repair it. Finally, A. J. crawled out, leaped over the pit wall, grabbed a wrench and had at the problem himself.

No go. Disgustedly, he flung down the wrench and walked off the length of pit row looking for all the world like a magnificent old lion whose day has passed.
