Cummings Moves Up, Lands on Pole
Glen Cummings of Highland, the Orange Show Speedway modified stock car champion, moved up to the All American Challenge series Saturday at Riverside International Raceway and was a surprising pole winner for today’s LA 200, a companion feature to the Budweiser 400 Grand National race. The LA 200 starts at 11 a.m.
Cummings, a pipeline worker, qualified his Pontiac Firebird at 115.078 m.p.h. to edge defending champion Duke Hoenshell of Orange and Hershel McGriff, a 12-time winner here. Former Can-Am and Trans-Am champion George Follmer, who planned to run his first stock car race since 1972, was left without a ride when owner Harold Fagan withdrew the car.
