RIVERSIDE — Glen Cummings of Highland, the Orange Show Speedway modified stock car champion, moved up to the All American Challenge series Saturday at Riverside International Raceway and was a surprising pole winner for today’s LA 200, a companion feature to the Budweiser 400 Grand National race. The LA 200 starts at 11 a.m.
Cummings, a pipeline worker, qualified his Pontiac Firebird at 115.078 m.p.h. to edge defending champion Duke Hoenshell of Orange and Hershel McGriff, a 12-time winner here. Former Can-Am and Trans-Am champion George Follmer, who planned to run his first stock car race since 1972, was left without a ride when owner Harold Fagan withdrew the car.
