Proud Truth Will Miss Belmont Stakes With a Broken Leg
Proud Truth, the Florida Derby winner who was fifth in the Kentucky Derby, will miss the Belmont Stakes next Saturday because of a broken leg, trainer John Veitch said Saturday.
Veitch said the stretch-running colt, owned by Darby Dan Farm, suffered a saucer fracture (ring-like cracks) of the left front cannon bone.
Proud Truth, who skipped the Preakness, prepped for the 1 1/2-mile Belmont with a 1-length victory over Cutlass Reality in the 1 1/8-mile Peter Pan last Sunday.
“His shin was sore, and we took him over to Dr. William Reed, who took some pictures and there it was,” Veitch said. “We might have ignored it and gotten away with it, but he’s too useful an individual to take a chance.
“We’ll just have to wait until the fall,” said Veitch, who noted recovery time for such an injury was six to eight weeks.
Proud Truth has a career record of six wins and two seconds in 10 career starts and earnings of $529,977.
