Caras Wins UCI Election: After the results of two previous election results had been thrown out, the UC Irvine student government Wednesday announced the apparent winners of a third campus-wide election for new student leaders. The new student body president is Jim Caras, who topped three other candidates. If results are certified by the student council today, as expected, Caras would assume office later this month. The first campus election was invalidated after university officials uncovered alleged ballot stuffing. The second election was discarded after a furor, and then federal court law suit, erupted over seizure of a campus publication that endorsed candidates as balloting proceeded.
