Hearing Scheduled on Proposal for Fixed-Route Bus System
The City Council will hold a public hearing at 7:30 p.m. Monday to consider establishing a fixed-route bus system linking residential areas with major shopping areas, medical centers, schools and businesses within Monterey Park.
Buses would run on five routes from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. and on four routes during the middle of the day. The fixed-route bus system has been recommended by the city’s Ad Hoc Transportation Committee as the preferred alternative among four transit options suggested by Dave Consulting Inc. of Santa Ana.
The recommendation calls for the city to retain its dial-a-ride service, which is available only to the handicapped and people 55 or older.
The local bus line would tie in with regional bus service provided by the Southern California Rapid Transit District and Montebello Municipal Bus Lines. Monterey Park would finance the transit system with revenue from Proposition A, the half-cent sales tax for transportation. Monterey Park will receive an estimated $563,000 in Proposition A revenue in the fiscal year starting July 1.
If the council decides to establish the bus system, it must then decide whether to run the system itself or hire a contractor.
