The Region : Five Killed; Driver Held

The driver of a pickup truck was booked for investigation of felony drunk driving and felony vehicular manslaughter after broadsiding a car at a busy Apple Valley intersection in a collision that took the lives of a mother and her four children, California Highway Patrol officers said. Bail was set at $100,000 for Dennis Jewell, 34, of Hesperia. Dead in the crash were Jeanette Willis, 40, and her children, Brendon; 11, Ebony, 9; Torey, 7, and 6-month-old Mark. Witnesses told CHP officers that Jewell’s truck was traveling 65 to 70 m.p.h. and failed to stop at the intersection.
