Massimino, 51, Is Expected to Take New Jersey Nets’ Job, 4-Year Contract Today

Rollie Massimino, who coached Villanova to the 1985 NCAA basketball title, is expected to be named coach of the New Jersey Nets at a press conference today.

According to published reports, the deal will pay the 51-year-old Massimino $375,000 a year for four years. If he remains with the club after that, he will receive a salary increase, and if he leaves will receive $100,000 a year as a consultant.

Stan Albeck quit the Nets earlier this week to become coach of the Chicago Bulls.

Philadelphia Flyer assistant coach Ted Sator has been named head coach of the New York Rangers.

Craig Patrick, Ranger vice president and general manager, said the Flyers will be compensated, apparently with a minor leaguer, for the loss of the 35-year-old Sator.

It is believed that Sator got at least a two-year contract. Sator succeeds Patrick as coach. Patrick had taken over as Ranger coach last January when Herb Brooks was fired after having coached the team since the 1981-82 season.

Two of four Duquesne University basketball players cleared of rape charges recently have been expelled from school for two years and stripped of their athletic scholarships.

Expelled were Gregory Harrison, 20, of Lynn, Mass., and Eric Compton, 19, of Long Beach, N.Y. They and Ronald Stevenson, 20, of Pittsburgh were tried and acquitted last month on charges of rape, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and indecent assault.

Identical charges against a fourth member of the team, Emmett Sellers, 20, of Newark, N.J., were dismissed after the three others had been acquitted.

Memphis State basketball players were given money, cars and “pseudo jobs” by William B. Tanner, a booster who owned an advertising agency, Sports Illustrated has reported.

Asked how much money was involved, Harry Davis, former vice president and controller of the William B. Tanner Co., told the magazine, “How does $1,500 a month sound?”

Tanner, however, denied the charges.

An unidentified source also told the magazine that the FBI and the Internal Revenue Service have been looking into the gambling habits and possible debts of Memphis State Coach Dana Kirk, stemming from his association with the Colonial Country Club.
