Stuart C. Knox, a psychiatrist who founded and for many years led the child guidance clinic at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center and who also was chairman or member of many of Los Angeles’ most prestigious mental health and substance abuse committees, is dead.

Knox was 80 and died Monday at the center after an extended illness, although he continued his medical practice until two weeks ago.

He was in private practice in Los Angeles at the outbreak of World War II and was commissioned a medical officer in the Navy, where he received two Silver Stars for gallantry under fire in the battle for the New Georgia islands and the landing at Bougainville.

A funeral service will be held today at 11 a.m. at North Church, Forest Lawn Memorial-Park, Hollywood Hills. Knox’s wife, Rozella, and two daughters are asking contributions in lieu of flowers to the Stuart C. Knox Fund at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center, 1300 N.
