A fire raced through the lower-level of a Fountain Valley residence Friday, causing $45,000 in damage, injuring one firefighter and leaving a family of five homeless.

Richard Talosi, 10, was alone in his home at 17322 Santa Clara St. when the blaze broke out in the den just after 1 p.m., forcing the boy out of the house, according to Battalion Chief Paul Summers of the Fountain Valley Fire Department. Richard’s parents, Daniel and Sara Talosi, and other family members, were away at the time.

Neighbors alerted firefighters to the blaze, which spread quickly to other parts of the wood dwelling. The fire was contained in about 10 minutes by Fountain Valley and Huntington Beach companies, Summers said. One firefighter cut his hand on broken glass, but no other injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, fire officials said. The family reportedly is being provided with temporary shelter by the American Red Cross.
